    De wadplaten van de Waddenzee zijn van groot belang voor trekkende steltlopers. Ze tanken er bij op weg naar de broedgebieden in het voorjaar en de overwinteringslocaties in het najaar (o.a. Boere 1977, van de Kam et al. 1999, Reneerkens et al. 2005). Sommige soorten steltlopers die door de Waddenzee trekken, zoals Kanoeten Calidris canutus en Rosse Grutto’s Limosa lapponica, overwinteren massaal in slechts enkele gebieden: de Banc d’Arguin in Mauritanië en de Bíjagos archipel in Guinee-Bissau. In contrast daarmee strekt het overwinteringsgebied van Drieteenstrandlopers Calidris alba, Steenlopers Arenaria interpres en Bontbekplevieren Charadrius hiaticula zich uit langs de hele kust van West-Europa en de westkust van Afrika (Delany et al. 2009). Maar waar komen de in de Waddenzee doortrekkende Drieteenstrandlopers vandaan en waar gaan ze naar toe? De afgelopen jaren zijn veel Drieteenstrandlopers op allerlei locaties langs de Oost-Atlantische trekroute individueel herkenbaar gemaakt met behulp van kleurringen (Reneerkens et al. 2009a). Hierdoor konden we inzicht verkrijgen in de herkomst en bestemming van de Drieteenstrandlopers die in de nazomer van 2011 rond het eiland Griend in de centrale Nederlandse Waddenzee pleisterden.     Gradual semantics are methods that evaluate overall strengths of individual arguments in graphs. In this paper, we investigate gradual semantics for extended frameworks in which probabilities are used to quantify the uncertainty about arguments and attacks belonging to the graph. We define the likelihoods of an argument’s possible strengths when facing uncertainty about the topology of the argumentation framework. We also define an approach to compare the strengths of arguments in this probabilistic setting. Finally, we propose a method to calculate the overall strength of each argument in the framework, and we evaluate this method against a set of principles

    How to bridge the nurse innovation–diffusion gap? An in-depth case study of Create4Care

    IntroductionNurses frequently innovate in response to operational failures, regulations, procedures, and/or other workflow barriers that prevent them from delivering high-quality patient care. Unfortunately, most nurse innovations do not diffuse to a broader audience, depriving other nurses from taking advantage of solutions that have already been developed elsewhere. This under-diffusion is problematic from a societal and welfare point of view. The goal of this paper is to understand how diffusion shortage of nurse innovations can be reduced.MethodsWe develop a qualitative case study of a medical makerspace at the largest academic hospital in the Netherlands. This medical makerspace reported unusually high rates of nurse innovation diffusion. Our data collection includes on-site observations, archival data, secondary data, and fifteen in-depth interviews with key informants. Qualitative coding procedures and a combination of deductive and inductive reasoning are used to analyze the data.ResultsOur data show that personal, organizational, regulatory, and market barriers prevent nurses from further developing and diffusion their innovations in an anticipatory manner. That is, because nurses expect that transforming an initial solution into an innovation that can be shared with others will be too time consuming and difficult they do not proceed with the further development. The medical makerspace that we investigated adequately addresses this problem by developing an innovation ecosystem that largely takes over the innovation and diffusion process.DiscussionWe provide a concrete example of how a medical makerspace, and innovation support systems in a broader sense, can be designed to more adequately address the nurse innovation-diffusion gap. The two main elements of the practical solution that we identified are: (1) Support systems should facilitate that others may lead the development and diffusion of innovations and (2) The support system should promote that actors integrate their functional specializations within an innovation ecosystem. We make two theoretical contributions. First, we contribute to understanding barriers in the nurse innovation-diffusion process from a psychological point. Second, we identified that an ecosystem perspective is beneficial to develop innovation support systems in which diffusion occurs more often

    Digestive capacity and toxicity cause mixed diets in red knots that maximize energy intake rate

    Among energy-maximizing animals, preferences for different prey can be explained by ranking the prey according to their energetic content. However, diet choice also depends on characteristics of the predator, such as the need to ingest necessary nutrients and the constraints imposed by digestion and toxins in food. In combination, these factors can lead to mixed diets in which the energetically most profitable food is not eaten exclusively even when it is abundant. We studied diet choice in red knots (Calidris canutus canutus) feeding on mollusks at a West African wintering site. At this site, the birds fed primarily on two species of bivalves, a thick-shelled one (Dosinia isocardia) that imposed a digestive constraint and a thin-shelled one (Loripes lucinalis) that imposed a toxin constraint. The latter species is toxic due to its symbiotic association with sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. We estimated experimentally the parameters of a linear programming model that includes both digestive and toxin constraints, leading to the prediction that red knots should eat a mixture of both mollusk species to maximize energy intake. The model correctly predicted the preferences of the captive birds, which depended on the digestive quality and toxicity of their previous diet. At our study site, energy-maximizing red knots appear to select a mixed diet as a result of the simultaneous effects of digestive and toxin constraints

    Monitoring biosecurity in poultry production: an overview of databases reporting biosecurity compliance from seven European countries

    Compliance with required on-farm biosecurity practices reduces the risk of contamination and spread of zoonotic and economically important diseases. With repeating avian influenza epidemics in the poultry industry, the need to monitor and improve the overall level of biosecurity is increasing. In practice, biosecurity compliance is assessed by various actors (e.g., academic, private and public institutions), and the results of such assessments may be recorded and gathered in databases which are seldom shared or thoroughly analyzed. This study aimed to provide an inventory of databases related to the assessment of biosecurity in poultry farms in seven major poultry-producing European countries to highlight challenges and opportunities associated with biosecurity data collection, sharing, and use. The institutions in charge of these databases were contacted and interviewed using a structured questionnaire to gather information on the main characteristics of the databases and the context of their implementation. A total of 20 databases were identified, covering the gamut of poultry species and production types. Most databases were linked to veterinary health authorities or academia, and to a lesser extent interbranch organizations. Depending on the institutions in charge, the databases serve various purposes, from providing advice to enforcing regulations. The quality of the biosecurity data collected is believed to be quite reliable, as biosecurity is mostly assessed by trained farm advisors or official veterinarians and during a farm visit. Some of the databases are difficult to analyze and/or do not offer information concerning which biosecurity measures are most or least respected. Moreover, some key biosecurity practices are sometimes absent from certain databases. Although the databases serve a variety of purposes and cover different production types, each with specific biosecurity features, their analysis should help to improve the surveillance of biosecurity in the poultry sector and provide evidence on the benefits of biosecurity

    Development and measurement of guidelines-based quality indicators of caesarean section care in the Netherlands: A RAND-modified delphi procedure and retrospective medical chart review

    Background There is an ongoing discussion on the rising CS rate worldwide. Suboptimal guideline adherence may be an important contributor to this rise. Before improvement of care can be established, optimal CS care in different settings has to be defined. This study aimed to develop and measure quality indicators to determine guideline adherence and identify target groups for improvement of care with direct effect on caesarean section (CS) rates. Method Eighteen obstetricians and midwives participated in an expert panel for systematic CS quality indicator development according to the RAND-modified Delphi method. A multi-center study was performed and medical charts of 1024 women with a CS and a stratified and weighted randomly selected group of 1036 women with a vaginal delivery were analysed. Quality indicator frequency and adherence were scored in 2060 women with a CS or vaginal delivery. Results The expert panel developed 16 indicators on planned CS and 11 indicators on unplanned CS. Indicator adherence was calculated, defined as the number of women in a specific obstetrical situation in which care was performed as recommended in both planned and unplanned CS settings.
